View Full Version : schooners for sale?
Had this disscusion with a couple of other bar flies at the hill bar last time I was down in PCB. Just a rumor?
I heard the same thing from my next door neighbor. I live a block from Schooners and am worried that the rumor is true. Can anyone confirm this??
It blows my mind that people can really be talking about Schooners being for sale . Can it be real tell me it is not so.
rumor has it....lease will expire spring 05 :(
I sure hope this isnt true. There sure have been many great memories there.
A good contact tells me that the lease is up and they were closing down, hence the opening of BoatYard. But I hear the owner decided not to sell the land and may let them stay. I surely hope so, I am so tired of them tearing up our beautiful beaches. Us locals have nowhere to go anymore.
I would say it is TRUE, considering some certain people have not posted denying the rumor

I noticed the same thing. Someone from Schooners usually adds their input to the messages on the boards....but not this one. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?!?!?
Well at least it will still be there when we're down next weekend (June 25th-28th).
I can not understand why they would sell it. It has to be making a lot of money. I go pretty regularily when I am in PC. I have always said if there was 1 business I would love to own, it would be Schooners.
the reason no one from schooners has replied is because we don't know either.
Oh please, please, please so this isn't so!!!!!! Schooners is the coolest place in PCB!!! I only get to go one week out of the year while on vacation but I dream about it the rest of the year!!!
To whomever has the power....... KEEP YOUR LEASE PLEASE!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

This year was our first Schooners experience and we hate the thought of them closing...our group is down there every year for thunder beach and cant stand the thought of Schooners not being there
I have heard they own the building but not the land. Their land lease is up next year and that phase two of the Seychelles condos is going to take over the land. This is absolutly terrible. I have been all over the world and Schooners is the only place I want to go to time and time again......the developers are going to ruin PCB. If anyone knows of anyway to save this place please speak out now!!!! :x
How much do I need to raise to save Schooners?
We are NOT selling Schooners! We love it as much as you guys do! Yes, our lease is up for renewal next year, and we are working with our landloard to renew it. We have every reason to believe it will renew - the landlord loves Schooners, too! We have also offered to buy the land from her, and, if she decides to sell it, we have first option on it.
So.... unless something dreadful and unforeseen takes place - Schooners is going to keep rockin along at it's customary laid back pace!
I promise we'll let everyone know if there's a problem - but, right now, rest easy! The Last Local Beach Club is fine and dandy!

Thanks so much for your response. I certainly hope that you are successful in renewing the lease or buying the club property. If you should need investors, I am sure we can find them. While we all love to see the appreciation in property values, the negative of this development will ruin what has made PCB a great place. I hate Destin traffic and lines for dinner!! I have a great idea for a beach club that would not need to be directly on the beach, but as long as Schooners is there, someplace else would not be needed!!!
Keep those of us reading this informed. 8)
We will let you know if anything changes... but, for now... everything looks fine!
thanks for all your support!
Schooners - and the people who love it - are the BEST in the WORLD!

Toni,
Thank you for your response. Many silent people in the background are quite interested. In the event you need investors, please post note. Your resources are not limited. You have a great spot. Let's try to keep it.
I find out the Miracle Strip Park has been sold now I find out that Schooners might be sold too!!!!
I sure wish that places like Schooners would hang in there and not sell!!!
I really hate to see Panama City Beach lose more of the "old time," "small town" beach resort feel. It started with the loss of several of the small family owned and operated Hotels and Motels as well as the unique and interesting gift shops, and now I see that the disease called "High Rise Condos" is spreading quickly along with National Chain shops and stores.
I have no idea what has gotten into the Panama City Beach City Council unless it is greed!
Why destroy all that made this beach resort attractive, special and appealing? Why is there this need to be like other beach communities? What is wrong with preserving the small town feel, friendly, all american beach town?
It is such a tragedy to see what was once a wonderful, fun, family vacation spot turn into a street full of high rise condos. It used to be that families of all income ranges could afford to come to PCB and have a wonderful time. That will soon not be the case!
Generation after generation would remember their visits of their childhood and bring their families. Those days are quickly disappearing!
If the PCB City Council, and other local organizations, do not wake up and act quickly PCB the Vacation Resort will be gone....along with a big source of practically year around revenue!
What an unnecessary waste!
I hope someone calls forums like this to the City Council's attention!
What a wonderful lost opportunity to preserve PCB and keep it's special qualities and all that make it different from all the other beach resort communities.
All that is left for me to say is...when this happens the PCB of my, and many others childhood's will be missed! I feel sorry for all the generations to come who will miss out on all the wonderful sunny days spent in a very special place...Panama City Beach!
I hope that Schooners stays in business for that is one of the reasons we come to Panama City Beach.
We have spent part of every summer in PCB for the last 14yrs. It has become our home away from home. During our last visit in June we heard of the future sale of Schooners after the lease runs out from many "business" locals there. We have been saddened to see all of the old haunts close one by one and so many high rise condos, parking lots or whatever go up in their place. Part of the charm of PCB for so many of us that come and spend our summers there has been the older things. From King Neptune, the hotels and shops to the amusement park and Goofy Golf. On the other hand the high rise condos go up and the older yet cheaper places the kids stay in are torn down. It seems to me PCB is commiting a slow suicide! Those of us who have been spending our summers there for so long won't recognize it enough to make the trip and the kids won't be able to afford the high rise condos. Your wonderful town depends on its tourist trade to keep it going. For the last few years I would always say, "Yeah, but they still have Schooners." I suppose money talks & people get tired....It's just a shame.

Just an update... to keep you posted on all the rumors that we are selling Schooners.
WE ARE NOT SELLING SCHOONERS! We love it.
We are especially proud that we made it through Ivan with hardly a scratch - our guys did an awesome job preparing for the storm, and, today (Sunday, Sept. 26) is the climax of Lobster Fest - the beach is beautiful, there are giant sandcastles everywhere and happy people eating lobster.
It's the most perfect place on earth, and, if it is within our power, Schooners will be here forever! (It may truly be the LAST LOCAL BEACH CLUB by the time the developers get through!)

I just found this forum & had something to add to the rumor. We were down the week before Ivan & stayed in the townhouses next to Schooners, we have stayed there the last 3 yrs & love the area & really love being right next door to such a great bar! Anyway, when we checked out we were told the townhouses had been sold & were being torn down to make way for another high rise that would cover the whole block from there to the other new high rise & clear over to Thomas Drive. We were devastated. We go to PCB because of the laid back non-high rise condo atmosphere. So sad that it will all be gone. We will be back next fall in a new rental home & hope to still visit Schooners, but it doesn't sound good according to the real estate agency.
If Schooners isn't around it simply means progress overstepped it's bounds. We've been staying 1 block away for 18 years and besides one *&%$head manager 3 years ago have ALWAYS enjoyed Schooners for carry-out 3-4 times / week, 2 suppers and LOTS of adult beverages. This past July when we made our annual trip I heard many of the rumors / facts posted here. I then took in LOCAL scenery and saw what others see.
We'll soon need to find another destination. I don't mind progress and appreciate the fact people can make $$ from their investments. BUT- I don't have to go there, and by the looks of high rises going up, add to that every house alongside Schooners being for sale, it's wiping out the personality that drew us all there to begin with. I have heard great things about the area 60 miles East and figure in another 2-3 years I'll have to switch my destination spot. We took the kids ( 17 & 13 ) for ride with camcorder running so they can show THEIR kids the way it used to be.
"Back in the Day" is sad phrase to use to describe PCB and surrounding area, but it seems only a few years until they're a distant memory.
Lease will have to go, as patrons won't be around to justify the expen$e even IF she decides to spare that area. I will add a ray of hope in case you think the older crowd PCB is gearing up for can keep Schooners operating at a profit...Let them build around you. That's right, there's a place in New York or ??? that had a lease that couldn't be broke. The developers had to bui;d around them. MAYBE this idea is radical enough to catch on, and your bar could stand , even if high rise literally covers you up...You'll have the beach and many old folks staying steps from your door. The publicity alone would be worth lots to developers and Schooners. I only hope enough would still visit to make it worthwhile.
remember where you got the idea...renegade from Gean & Liz's place 45 steps away put in your head..........Rotsa Ruck...The entire area is going to need it if things keep going the way they are now.
Makes us mad we didn't invest and get rich with everyone else near Schooners that's selling out. Laterz[/i][/b]
The closing of this club would be devistating. When my cousin & myself have been there we have gone there at least three times during the week. Schooners is a great place to have fun. I hope & pray it is still around so we can go there next year when we re-visit.
If all the old hang-out and fun things to do, what will all the new condo dwellers do hang out and look at other condos? Are there new entertainment establisments also being developed? My thinking is....the condos will make it impossible for the younger crowd to "take over" and LaVila doesn't appeal to people of all ages. So are there opportunist that have plans for cool place upper scale older people that will be coming with these condos? I'm sure Schooners will be a favorite but there fate has been in question on the forum and frankly one small beach bar is not going to be the draw........
I always loved PCB but if I want to go somewhere without my kids before I would have gone to Destin. I look forward to seeing how the party scene in PCB changes with the new progress.
I think Schooners could become a goldmine if a little expanion were in the future......AJ's is a huge draw in Destin for both young and old it is those types of places that will be needed in PCB....With the condos money will be coming....my thoughts are who will get it?

Thanks for letting us know Toni!
I hope schooners continues to stay open.. My friends and I visit this local beach club about 3 -5 times a year during the summer. Our favorite is area code plus a few others. This place is awesome and have met many friends there. Who ever has control.........please take control and keep this hangout open for us. The only place in PC to go and have a good clean time.
