Just a loving reminder to those of you who are coming to enjoy the beach this year and in years to come. The flag system was set up to protect you, not steal your joy. I guarantee you won't be having fun if you're dead.
For those who don't know what I am referring to:
Green flag - all is clear
Yellow flag - rip currents possible, exercise caution
Red flag - RIP CURRENTS PRESENT! Knee deep is too deep.
Double Red flags - The water is closed. Yes, this means you. I don't care if you drove down from the North Pole! Stay out of the water! I won't drown to rescue your butt, but I will notify authorities so they can drag your corpse in when you float close enough.
Purple flag - Dangerous marine life. Could be jellyfish, sharks, or any other number of potentially dangerous creatures.
I know my double red warning is strongly worded and a little morbid, but I am sick of hearing about someone drowning all the time. Seems like we've had more than our fair share in the past month. We want you to have fun and be safe. Everyone bad-mouths the Spring Breakers for doing stupid stuff. Well, how much more intelligent is the Illinois man I saw on the news saying they drove too far to not enjoy the water WITH THEIR KIDS, all the while double reds were flying right behind him on camera. Really???
Play smart! We want y'all to come back and see us again!
